Press release from The Sky Factory - 2008-07-03

An innovative product: virtual skylight emulates the rising and setting sun.

The Sky Factory has improved its line of virtual design skylights: SkyCeilings by introducing a programmable feature that recreates and simulates the rising and setting of the sun. This new product with the programmable feature effectively enhances the illusions of nature that the company has been creating for over six years.

The illusion is enhanced by introducing changes of light, color, and time. With the programmable feature it is possible to have a SkyCeiling rise and set with the sun and follow the local time for the change in intensity of light.

This added dimmable feature for SkyCeilings increases both ascetic appeal and real benefits to human physiology and well-being. For example, in an ICU SkyCeilings can reinforce the bodies’ circadian rhythm to help healing. Another way to implement this technology is in a nurse’s station where you can create an environment of alertness during the middle of the night. This same type of effect can also be translated for casinos, restaurants, and other venues. In short, it’s a tool for modifying experience in virtually any interior environment.
How it works and technical features

The Programmable SkyCeiling uses the same 6500K, T-5 fluorescent. Lighting as our ordinary SkyCeiling’s but is enhanced by a separate set of 2800K T-5 lighting and the DALI control system. DALI, (an acronym for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is a digital protocol for the controlling of lighting, such as electrical ballasts and dimmers. The system can be manually controlled via personal computer or programmed to run on a timer through a locally installed control box.
