The Chicago showroom opening fits into the company’s global expansion plan that was launched with the opening of showrooms in Milan, Cologne, Stockholm, New York and London, and highlights the company’s strategic approach to the North American market. The goal is affirming Arper’s position in central markets such as the United States and Canada, and, more generally, the Americas, which since 2008 has already benefited from the presence of a subsidiary, Arper USA Inc.
The location chosen for the new Chicago showroom is the historic Merchandise Mart, one of world’s largest commercial buildings with an over 372,000 m2 surface. Since 1930 it has been hosting shops, showrooms and permanent and temporary architecture and Interior Design exhibition areas. The Merchandise Mart also hosts Neocon, the most important international event in America in the context of corporate contract, attracting architects, dealers, designers and press from around the world.
In fact, during the fair, which takes place from 10 to 12 June, Arper will open the doors of the new exhibition facility, which will house, in about 150 m2, the 2013 product innovations as well as the major collections in the catalogue. The Arper’s exhibition space (no. 339) is hosted on the 3rd floor, one of the most coveted and prestigious floors of the structure.
The architectural project of the showroom was developed by the architect Solveig Fernlund, while the layout of the showroom was realized by Studio Lievore Altherr Molina.
About the poject, Solveig Fernlund said: I wanted the showroom to feel like a gallery, with the chairs being displayed like sculptures on slightly raised platforms. They are grouped in a diagonal pattern following the shape of the showroom wall at the end of the space. The square platforms form a faceted silver surface reflecting the outline of each chair. I love working with people and companies involved with art and design and the dialogue that is integral to these projects. Arper is an inspiring company with a good eye for clean strong design and I enjoyed the collaboration very much. I think the Arper showroom is very close to my working philosophy and what I try to achieve ”

Arper will also take part in the “Best of Neocon” prize, where it competes with Juno in the “seating category: stacking” and with Aava and Saya, in the “seating category: guest”.
The Arper stand is futhermore also competing for the “Booth Design Competition” prize, organized by IIDA/Contract Magazine.

The new training site includes a 400m Regupol AG running track, a water pit for the steeplechase, facilities for javelin, discus and hammer throwing, as well as long jump, triple jump and pole vaulting facilities. A special feature of this running track is that the straight sections on both sides of the track have been extended. This means that it can be used for sprints and the 100 and 110m hurdle races. The reason behind this is that the track has a seafront location and the wind direction changes from morning to evening. However, the weather conditions and the tropical climate in Barbados have no effect on the physical properties of the Regupol track surface, which remain constant, even in conditions of extreme heat or cold.

The reference project for the Regupol AG track surface by BSW was the 400m track in the Usain Bolt Stadium of the partner university in Jamaica, where both students and members of the famous Racers Track Club, including Usain Bolt, have been running on the same blue BSW surface. Extensive on-site testing and numerous reports of positive experiences convinced the decision makers at the UWI University in Barbados of the quality of Regupol floors and the reliability of the BSW service.

The decision turned out to be the right one. The university reports that the number of athletes listed in the sports programme has tripled since the opening of the track. It appears that the striking colour scheme of the track draws in the runners.

Since the construction of a blue Regupol synthetic track in the Berlin Olympic stadium, a trend for running tracks in blue and other colours has emerged. The six-storey school building with its unusual façade, is wrapped with an undulating skin of bronze and copper fins that extend along its western façade and over the roof to engulf the building. To the east elevation, the fins give way to a curved brise soleil made of 2,200 m² of architectural wire mesh by Haver & Boecker.

The wave-like wire mesh cladding made of architectural weave type EGLA-MONO softens the geometry of the building and creates an effective aesthetic sun protection screen in front of the classrooms. This transparent façade allows unobstructed views from inside the classrooms and reflects the sunrays to protect the interior from overheating.

The stainless steel wire mesh cladding extends over the entire length of the building and seems to exist optically out of three horizontal wire mesh bands. Each band consists of several vertically tensioned wire mesh elements of widths from 1.50 m to 2 m and heights of 3 m to 6.50 m. On the corners pre-curved wire mesh elements were used to implement the round geometry of the façade.

For this grand project Haver & Boecker supplied ready to install wire mesh elements using the tension profile & clevis bolt mounting system, with wire connectors for the intermediate mounting. A special mounting system was developed for the pre-curved corner mesh elements. The exhibition architecture focuses on the typology and atmosphere of the Baroque house – transported to the here and now. The museum design is sensitive to the small-scale structure of the House and enters into a creative dialogue with it. The dominant stylistic device of the Baroque, the play of light and shadow, has been reinterpreted through the use of the HI-MACS® solid-surface material. The themed room "Under the Arcadian Sun" is exemplary of this skilful implementation. Handel’s four-year sojourn in Italy and the intimate pieces of chamber music that he wrote during this period are here symbolised through a delicate arch construction made of HI-MACS®. A floral pattern, whose precise perforation appears to be playful, has been milled in acrylic stone by the manufacturer Möbel Damm, trained by Klöpfer Surfaces, the distribution partner of HI-MACS®. This ‘curved pergola’, as it is referred to by the architects, stands detached from the walls in the room, so that it casts shadows and contains interactive items documenting the life of the artist. The interpretation of Baroque ornamentation in the architectural language of the 21st century allows itself to be skilfully realised through the selection of the modern material. Because HI-MACS® uses its universal properties - such as optical seamless processing, thermoforming, simple processing, robustness coupled with a warm feel and, last but not least, the clean and simple milling – to enable a new interpretation of Baroque aesthetics.

“We turn over tables. We’ll do anywhere between 600-1000 people in an evening,” said Hurricanes Corporate Services Pty Ltd, General Manager, Steve Sidd. “We’ve got an outside balcony area, which on a cold or rainy day we were losing a lot of revenue, which resulted in a lot of people waiting longer for a table, so we made a decision we needed the heaters to utilise the area.”

Steve demanded a heater that could cater to the needs of the venue and after looking around various companies Steve decided to go with Bromic Heating. “Bromic heaters are ceiling mounted and they’re out of the way and you don’t have to worry about gas bottles, so it’s easy for the staff, easy for the managers, easier for control. It’s a perfect fit,” he said.

Hurricane’s upgraded from out-of-date mushroom heaters. “We had floor mushroom heaters and ceiling mounted mushroom heaters. . . when you’ve got to move tables around, so you can accommodate for small tables, large tables they’re always being in the way,” Steve said.

Described as “dreary, uninspired and as boring as a hundred other houses in the surrounding area” by Dr Günter Haese, Director of the residential building co-operative Gartenheim eG, who developed, together with the architect Larisa Kozjak, the idea of renovating the façade in a way that would turn the building into a modern jewel.

Their concept to envelope the building with an uplifting colour scheme and at the same time creating the image of a warm ‘scarf’ around the building led to the development of a ‘knitted design’ for the façade. ROCKPANEL façade panels in six carefully-chosen RAL colours were ‘knitted’ into a stimulating, alternating light and dark coloured pattern all around the building.

Aesthetically successful knitting pattern
The architect Dipl.-Ing. Larisa Kozjak remains intrigued by the creative possibilities that have been opened up by the use of the ROCKPANEL Rockclad façade panels: “We’ve replaced a purely functional yet unattractive surface with a highly expressive web structure that surrounds the building like a custom-made suit.” However, nothing was left to chance when planning the 700 m2 façade: the deployment of each of the six colours was precisely planned in order to ensure a successful overall aesthetic look. “When using so many and such strong colours, one must be very careful to avoid giving the impression of a thrown-together, muddled mess.”, notes Larisa Kozjak.

Sustainable makes for better living
“We also made a point of explaining the quality of the processed materials to our tenants”, explains Dr Haese. “Both the insulation from ROCKWOOL and the façade cladding from ROCKPANEL are building materials which are recognised in sustainable construction. This means that their eco-balance is good and they are recyclable.”

ROCKPANEL façade panels are weather- and UV-resistant and colourfast, and can be cleaned if desired. “This guarantees the façade to look good for decades to come, which isn’t always the case for plastered surfaces. The award was received by the Landscaping architect Margarida Quelhas on behalf of the Angolan and Portuguese team offices, Costa Lopes (Angola) and Território, Paisagem, Arquitectura (Portugal), delivered in the 9th edition of Urba Verde – Forum for Sustainable Cities.

One of the most emblematic works in Luanda, an enterprise design to mark an epoch of Angola’s development, the bay requalification investment, a maritime walk through over more than 3km, with a cycling way, 10 new squares 3 playgrounds, another’s to practiced sport, 5 street basketball courts and 5 different spaces for cultural events.

It was intended to return to Luanda one of their fundamental public spaces, for both urban life and City image, in a Project that will be, really soon one of the hallmarks in the Angola Capital, and where is stands out the Amop Concrete Urban furniture, Ar Puro Line.

This work, developed by the Society of Luanda Bay (whose main shareholders are Sonangol, Banco Privado Atlântico, Banco Comercial Portuguese and Finicapital), gives the body a government decision that defined the redevelopment of this stunning bay and despite being a project that implies higher funding could finance themselves primarily in private banking without recourse to public funds. Grupoamop proposes an overall concept for architecture and landscape architecture, based on a model of industrial synergies and creative. Incorporating the values and vision of the design as a strategic tool in the growth and internationalization in its industrial business areas, street furniture, private furniture, wall coverings and floors, with clients, architects and designers.
