As part of an extensive renovation of the van der Meulen residence, completed under the supervision of Olendia Garden design, HutJ was commisioned to create a series of furniture elements for the master bedroom. The 3m (10') long home headboard is a black walnut veneer basket weave intentionally exagerrated to a massive scale to showcase the beauty of the natural wood and, hopefully to play a bit with people's expectitaions and preconceptions about materials.
The bedside contract tables are a variation on a HutJ Collection piece called Boxes and in the van der Meulen bedroom, they almost appear to be a part of the Headboard. Across the room, two large clothing modern storage units are constructed using book matched spalted maple veneer sections separated by building platforms made of black walnut. We affectionately call these pieces Spalty Towers.
